Project Description

OVERVIEW : The Fire Museum of Maryland, located in Lutherville, MD (10 miles north of downtown Baltimore and 55 miles south of Newark), is one of the largest antique fire apparatus museums in the country. Housed inside are over 40 pieces of apparatus, 10,000 photographs, 5,000 archival materials, and related objects and memorabilia. It has a strong education program for area public and private schools, and is developing an outreach program for senior centers. The museum is currently serving as part of a regional museums consortium that is commemorating the Great Fire of Baltimore of 1904. The Fire Museum has designed and developed a new audio-guide tour of the Fire, utilizing apparatus, photographs, primary source materials, and memorabilia. It is developing new exhibitions on fire department alarm services and paramedic history.

JOB DESCRIPTION : The Museum is seeking an intern to work on collections management-related activities (loans, gifts, database entry, photography), small exhibits planning and implementation. The Museum will be closed during January & February 2008 for construction, so intern will assist with moving projects, cleaning and reinstallation.

Under the supervision of the Registrar, the intern will learn about the activities of a diverse history and technology museum. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in all areas of the Museum, learning about day-to-day administrative activities, educational and interpretive programs, and special events.

The intern will work on the preparation of loans and gifts paperwork, inventory, cataloguing, digital photography and data input (PastPerfect software).

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
Computer skills: Microsoft Office; database knowledge (training on PastPerfect provided). B.A. in art history, decorative arts, architectural or technological history, conservation preferred. Graduate level coursework in museum studies, museum education, American studies preferred.

Attention to detail and capacity to work on own with limited supervision. Ability to be extremely flexible, depending on daily activities of Museum staff.

SCHEDULE : 20 hours/week for semester. Schedule is flexible, depending on school requirements.
